Duct Sealing

Duct sealing and energy efficiency are seldom talked about together. Most people don't see the correlation. The HVAC system works as your systems pituitary gland in the same way the pituitary gland controls your body. During the heating and cooling season's it delivers hot or cold air to the home. If any part of the system is flawedit performs below its optimal efficiency.

Here's how, Supply Side Leaks

When the supply side of your system leaks conditioned air is being pushed into other areas inside the home causing some areas to be uncomfortable. The same air is also being pushed out of the home into the outside through leaks within the building structure causing heat bleed, losing you money. Ever wonder why the major cities are warmer in the winter than the out lying areas? Heat bleed, the structures release conditioned air from the HVAC system through leaks in the building structure essentially warming the area and with these buildings close proximity to each other allows the conditioned air accumulates as it rises. This causes the home to depressurize which puts a strain on the fan motor as the system try's to get enough air to balance the return and supply. Essentially causing your home to struggle to get enough air for the system to function properly.

Return Side Leaks

Return side leaks are much worse. As we just discussed above, return side leaks have the opposite effect on the home. As the fan at the air handler (furnace) is running the return is pulling outdoor ,hot or cold air into your home causing the furnace or air conditioner to run constantly to keep up with the demand for an indoor temperature that is comfortable to those inside. But, that is nothing compared to the real risk. Allergens, Pollutants, Dust, Carbon Monoxide and some of the unpleasant outdoor smells that can lessen your appetite let alone the health risk.

Bottom Line

Top factors to consider: Allergens, Pollutants, Dust, Carbon Monoxide, Pressurization and Uncomfortable conditions causing some rooms to be cold in the winter and and others to be hot in the summer. Home depressurization as well as equipment strain on the fan motor (furnace) will cause the HVAC system to struggle to get the correct amount of air to balance the return and supply side registers of your home. Again causing some rooms to be cold in the winter and and others to be hot in the summer causing discomfort throughout your home. The average replacement cost for the air handler (furnace) and air conditioning coil with the outdoor AC unit can be as high as $15,000. This is why HEAT BLEED has been an epidemic that must stop. Last year the
average home lost $1,144.00 to heat bleed!
